Ngwao Boswa Basket Weavers
Ngwao Boswa or ‘Culture is Heritage’ is the name given to the Non-governmental organization that aims to empower vulnerable women. It was founded by 10 women living in Gumare Village in the Ngamiland District just two hours drive from the centralized market place of Maun.Today the NGO has grown to have 65 registered members who make and sell basketry at the centre. Their baskets are all shapes and sizes. Basket weaving is an intricate and delicate process that requires skilful, dedicated and patient hands to entwine and bind together the different coloured grasses to make these beautiful crafts.
Not only does the centre provide a platform for baskets but also a vibrant meeting place for these women as they navigate the celebrations and hardships of rural life, together.
